Because the handles don't often fail, the dealer doesn't stock the part.
This brings a serious point that I don't want to bring up because it goes against the humorous intent of my posting.
I live on an island across from Seattle. To get to the smart dealer, I either take a ferry ($18 RT) or drive around Puget Sound (more than 3 hours RT if no traffic, plus $4 bridge toll). Because the part is not in stock, that means two trips to the dealer.
So, yes, it is an easy fix. The part is inexpensive as well ($10.12).
But, it is still costing me a lot of time and money (relative to the cost of the work) to resolve the situation. I would have preferred to just have the part sent to me and I could install it.
I don't know if any of you have tried to open the door to the smart using the outside handle from the inside of the car, but it is awkward.
