I had that same exact issue a couple of weeks ago. The deal informed me that it is a problem that Smart is aware of. It's acutally an issue with the clutch and they replaced the clutch within a couple of days, and now the care is perfect.
Same here. they have an updated clutch made of a different material. Happened to me at 10,000 miles.

If it is the Clutch, sounds like they will be replacing a lot of clutches LOL.
First time poster. I have problems on occasion with the car going into any gear. Happens about once or twice a month. Happens when the car is started from cold. (In heaterd garage, so weather not a factor). Foot on brake, move gear from park to reverse. Display in dash goes from "P" to nothing. Does not change when the selecor is moved back and forth until park, then "P" shows up again. After a few moves back and forth, it goes in normally. Took to dealer, could not duplicate, no codes, lubricated it, patted my head, and sent me on my way. It still does it. Any suggestions as to what to say to dealer? Thanks!!
I had this same thing happen to me today for the first time. With foot on brake and moving the selector to reverse, the dash display goes from P to blank and the car makes a beeping noise. Moving selector to neutral and Drive still shows blank display. Moving selector back to Park and the P shows in display. Solution was to turn the car off and restart. Basically, reboot the computer.
An idea would be to give the car a second or two to "unwind" when we kill the engine (for just an instant, leave the key in the ignition on position "0").
It happened to me a couple of times that I "confused" the ECU by rushing out, opening the door and killing the engine at the same time. And the ECU was still confused the next time I started the car.
Since then, I've trained myself to unbuckle after killing the engine...
I am pretty sure that I turn the car off before unbuckling. It seems weird to me that they would design in something like that. I'll check. Last night when I came home, and put it in park, it seemed to go into park with a bit of difficulty. Tried it just now (without starting it) and it was fine. The car has had it's gear selector lubricated at Smart when I took it in for the problem. Since they couldn't see it happen, and since there was no code, they just lubed it and said the selector moved easier. (I refer to that as a "pat on the head" sort of reply.) Sigh.

On occasion, our car does not seem to want to go into gear. It has failed to go into reverse when put into reverse and has failed to go into drive when put into drive.
Anyone else?
I have this problem once or twice a week. I find if I go ahead and put the car in D and let it pull forward a couple of feet and then put in back in reverse it will usually work. I suspect it could be a problem with the reverse gear not meshed and unable to engage and there is probably a limit switch which tells the computer that the car is in reverse.
Mine did the same when I went to back out of the drive last night. Many, many attempts in and out of 'P' finally showed 'N' in drive next try showed 'D' in drive and was able to back it up to 'R'. Shut it down tried again the same issue repeated. Tried a number of times each took more time to finally 'find' the correct gear. Shutting the engine down and letting it reset did not help. Called to have her taken to the dealer of course by the time the tow truck arrived it was working normally again. Still she was towed to Chicago this AM. I've been told it may be the shifter or that the cluch may need to be replaced, I'll update when she's done. Long drive when it's time to pick her up.
Good news. Smart found a code at today's visit. Bottom line, next week they are going to replace part of the transmission. I'll keep you advised. In my case, once or twice a month when starting, would show P while in park, when selector moved, would show nothing in the gauge cluster where the R, N, or D would be. Car would not move, acts like it is in neutral.
Thanks to smart center Easton!!
