This isn't completely the same issue, but... does anyone else feel like under light load, especially in 1st or 2nd gears, that the clutch slips every few seconds or something like that? I can feel a slight power loss every once in a while, only at low RPMs. It's much more noticeable when the AC's engaged and going up an incline, starting from a stoplight. I'm sure the AC compressor's a lot for a 3 cylinder engine to handle at 1500-2000 RPMs, but I wonder if this is more because it happens even with the AC and defrost off.

I have 23,440 miles on my smart and for the last 5 or 6 weeks my car will occasionally not be able to find gears from time to time.. If I shut the car off and restart it, it usually works just fine. Because my warranty is almost up I took it to the dealer. After one week they are still scratching their heads. They should spend more time on this site.

My car had the same issue, it would not go into park- so I could not take the key out or restart the car.. the first night I had to leave it in the driveway with the key in it! Smart Center of Devon sent a flatbed and took care of it very quickly. Replaced the shifter, re-flashed the 2.0 shifter software, replaced the battery (not sure why, but hey, its free!) They did a great job and it was back on the road the next day. I would advise anyone who has this problem to get it check asap- it only gets worse.

Had to have our Smart hauled to the dealership. The shift mechanism had to be lubricated. The dealership said that it was not an unusual malfunction

Car did it again, moving from Park, nothing showed up on dash display, and the car would rev but not move.
Third time in, they have now replaced the clutch and pressure plate.
The service report states "Tips document on this condition states that the input shaft will continue to spin not allowing the car to go into gear."

""Found that clutch disc was only contacting on half of its friction surface, also wearing the pressure plate only half way."

Smart is aware of this problem.

Cudos again to Smart Center Easton for all their help.

My transmission has not "engaged" four times. The first time it needed towing. The second time I could "train" it. The third & Fourth times it would not "train" and after about 30 minutes of just sitting around the "training" eventually did work. I just had the 2009 upgrade completed. I love the little car, but it needs to be reliable. The dealer has it now and is trying to solve the problem.
