Anyone Have This Sun Shade Problem?

My sunshade started to squeak today. I saw the back left corner of the sunshade moving like it was not attached to anything. I climbed in the back of the back and looked on top of the sunshade to find that the plastic nipple part of the roof that the sun shades screws screw into was broken away from the roof. This thing is attached to the roof of the car!!!
The local dealer is trying to find out how to fix this. I seriously think that i'm going to have to have the entire polycarbonate roof replaced to fix this.

Just to pick a nit - it's polycarbonate, not glass...

ON the subject of roof sun shades...

Keep and eye in the sides of your fabric that are in the channel... many of them are Fraying and causing a bind in the full retracted position or failing to fully retract...

I have inside knowledge that several are already being changed out under warranty but this is not new part..you just get a replacement original design..

I suggested silicone lube spray in the channel to stop the chaffing and fraying...tech told me they tried did not help...... I am going to spray mine anyway as preventative maintenance

My car was towed in last week for a no start concern, It had the shifter issue and had to have the shifter replaced.
They looked at the roof while it was there and had to order all the parts needed to repair this which are all on back order. They will have to replace the entire "polycarbonate" roof, the sunshade and reseal the roof.

Yup...my sun shade seized up, so I took it into the dealer today to have it replaced. The dealer ordered the replacement shade last week, and just received it yesterday. 20 minute job, so I wasn't too bothered. Now my shade works perfectly...

I have the same problem, but my dealer tried to fix it the same day I brought my Smartie in to check my tire monitor light. They screwed it up even more. Finally, after loosening half the sun shade up (with the cables dangling), they figure they should just order a new one for me.

I still love my Smartie though.;)

btw, 1st tank>>>>>35.8 mpg &
2nd tank>>>>>39.6 mpg
(hope it continues to go up)

From observing at the dealership, the sun shade seems very similar to the sunshade my old Mercedes Benz had. The only difference is on the benz it was motorized. I'm sure that insured a constant speed/pull rate which increased lifestime. With the smart's shade being manual, maybe some of the problems are due to pulling too fast/hard on it.

Where to put it!!!

I have no other place to put this so here it goes!!!

OK people! Here it goes: Get ready.

I am a smart owner!! above all and I love it.

I drive it every day!, and enjoy every second!

even sleep with a picture of it on my wall, and one in my wallet.

What I don't get is all these smart car owners that do not:

Read their manuals, do not treat their vehicles well (maintenance wise), put cheap oil and cheap gas in their cars, complain about how small the tires are, how many MPG they are getting, the seat does not recline, they only drive in shift mode, or they only drive in D mode, can fit all my 7 kids in it, salesperson was rude, people ask me too many questions, I can only type in pink, the shifter is stucked, my car beeps, I forgot to lock it, my key is too big, I have no spare, other people pass me on the higway, whine, whine, whine...

Let's get real people, Do not ask these questions and expect any sympathy from me. I DID MY RESEARCH! before I bought, I drove the thing many times before commiting to purchase, I asked 17,000 questions to the point of exhaustion and dispair to my dealer.

Why can't you do the same?

You come to this forum which will might as well could help me with a legitimate modification, or a real mechanical concern that could merit a recall from manufacturer, instead you complain and even call me names, for shame people, for shame!!

With this I leave you, many enemies will come, I'm sure, but the joy of staying my friend will come when the time is right!!
