Binding sun shade - will not retract

I stopped by my smart center today (San Jose, CA) to see if my binding sunshade was normal. I did not try it when I picked up the car but noticed later that it would not retract more than 1/3rd of the way. I went to try moving the sunshade in one of the passion model cars inside the dealership but it was missing the sunshade. There were 8 (if I remember correctly) screws in the polycarbonate roof on both sides that hold the sunshade in. One of the salespeople thought it was removed to replace a customer's broken sunshade. Dealer asked me come back next week for "an adjustment" or replacement of the sunshade.

I have had the car for about 2 weeks and was very careful to read the manual to see how to retract the sunshade. I have also been very gentle in trying to retract it. I think I have a defective one.

Is this a common issue?

Other than this issue, car has been great.

UH, you know what? This thread on all the problems on brand new cars manufactured by the prestigious Mercedes has me a bit concerned. We had a Mercedes way back when, then a Volvo (ea about 10 yrs). both were ongoing servicing & pars issues. That's when I went to Toyotas which we both have. Never a problem with either one & I was kinda hoping European cars had gotten better in terms of quality & attention to little details like that roof issue being discussed here. Ron

Just noticed my month-old orphan was having a shade problem. I investigated and found that the shade had slipped out of the clip. I was able to get it back into the slot, but will have my dealer look at it to make sure it is OK.

A lot of people complain that they are discouraged reading about all the compaints. I think this is the greatest site ever because of the open and honest way people ask questions and thank you to the numerous members more than happy to share their knowledge, experience and advice. This is the best car buying experience I have ever had because of SCOA!

I have the same problem on the passenger side. I tried to put it back but was afraid I might break the clip, so decided to wait till I'm at the dealer and have them try. Did you use anything to pry the clip apart?

I'm glad this thread is here, today I noticed the sunshade bunching a bit on the passenger side, seems the edge of the shade slipped out of the little U guild.

I'm not the only one... do i cheer?

I was able to slip it back into the clip without forcing it. It bunches up on the passenger side. I did not pry the clip open, I just carefully threaded it into the slot when it was in the closed position because the shade is thinner at the very end. Once it was in the slot, I opened it and the shade is again the slot. I'm still going to have the dealer look at it on Saturday.

Now that I own my "Sophia," I really love this site. I can search to see if my problem is common or unique. The problems are so slight, I don't really consider it a true complaint.

I was contacted by the dealer yesterday, my parts are in. They will be installing a new sunshade and an entire ROOF! Because the part of the roof that the sunshade attaches to is broken off of the roof and WAS THAT WAY WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR.
Of course the service advisor told me I should feel LUCKY that they are going to cover this under warranty because "I could have man handled it and broke it". That is a great way to talk to a new customer that has only 200 miles on his car. So I will be dropping it off for repairs this week. Hopefully this will be the last repairs I will need for a while.

I will say this... I got a call a few days ago from the area Smart rep concerning my recent trans shifter break down. He was very nice and apologized for the trouble I was having with my car which meant the world to me.
