Hi Untoddly,
it is a constant battle to get rid of squeeks and rattles on the smarts, if it bothers you get it checked at dealers, it will be under warranty anyway, or bung a KISS CD in the ICE and belt out "Forever".

My smart rattles; has been to the dealer.... they told me my door rattles cos it needs some door seal lube.... I nearly pee'd myself laffin'...... turned out the LUBE hid the problem for a day - along came my door rattle right back..... Door Seal Lube - thats great... right along with muffler bearings.....

The cover to my engine also shifts and makes mild noise....

I had to tighten the plastic cover on the inside of the rear glass to 'shut it up' as best I could.

I at this point ignore them....

The reason I disagree with you is because I have a dozen friends with smarts that all have the odd rattle hear and there...... which makes the ratio 12:1

On perfectly smooth roads my smart is silent.... alas for 31 miles of back roads to work there is nothing but rough bouncing... I have 7000+ on my smart

Your engine cover should be airtight, no shifting at all. In fact, it should be darned hard to close. Do you have the slots aligned at the back (toward front of car), with the bolt tightened on the front? The slots are hard to align, and if you've forced the slots or bolt in the past they may have bent, but there should be a flexible seal around the engine cover that makes it airtight.

That said, the Smart does have more rattles than most $30,000 cars but not nearly as many as the average $15,000 car. For 15 grand I'll get some tape now and then, if it's just a rattle. I store CD's in my door storage pockets and they'll rattle with the music, until I shift them around. My dashboard's developing a slight rattle now and then, but nothing major yet.
