Auto-off headlamps not turning off?!?

As the title states, my Auto-off headlamps aren't turning off during the day. According to the manual, the are supposed to turn off/on according to the ambient lighting (night/day)...which they have been doing, UP UNTIL TODAY. Any ideas? Has this happened to anybody else?

I am hoping it is just a glitch, and I will hop in my car in the morning...and everything will be back to normal. ha ha

Did you bump the adjuster from AUTO to ON?

Nope, this was the first thing I checked. I started messing with the lever to see if that was the issue, and each function worked properly (off & on)...except when I went to auto the lights came back on. HMMMmmmmm

Mine does that occasionally - and I have no clue why. Usually when I change to "OFF" and then back to "AUTO" the headlights will stay off - but sometimes they go right back on. I'm going to San Diego for July 4th and may take it into the dealer to see if they can figure it out. It's not worth it to me to drive to Chandler (my dealer but more than 4 hours away) in 100 degree heat just to have them check the lights.

Is something covering the light sensor for the lights? Like a dead bug? Dirt? Etc. I don't know where the sensor is, however, search of the forums might turn up that tidbit.

Shane, believe it or not, I was just about to post the same thing. I switched to AUTO (or so I thought), the lights always stay on even in bright day light. Until I realized I have to turn the knob a little further to hear a small click. It works as intended now.

I hadn't changed anything when it suddenly stopped working. I tried clicking back and forth, and it continued not to work. I will be driving my smart to work in the morning (as always), so hopefully the problem will be solved. I will also attempt to turn on and off the AUTO feature...looking for that little extra to enable the "click". ;) Thanks bud.

Well, I woke up this morning, hopped in the smart, and the lights STILL wouldn't turn off.

However, on my way to work it started drizzling, thus making the automatic windshield wipers come on. After the wipers swiped a few times, my headlights turned off!

This led me to the conclusion that the auto-off headlamp sensor is located in the same "puck" that the automatic windshield wiper sensor is in. What do you all think?

Yes that puck houses the rain and light sensor.

Oddly enough, my car wasn't dirty. Hmmmmmm

Maybe there was just enough dust to cause an issue? I wouldn't think it would be that sensitive, but you never know. Oh well, hopefully it continues to work.
