Garage
I would think that them not turning off would not be as much a problem as them not turning on !

really? i don't recall ever seeing anything like that.
perhaps more and more euro spec cars are coming through with DRL, but i've never run across a jurisdiction that "requires" them yet.

Canada does...

The US should make them manditory as well, IMO.

Sorry, but if you can't see opposing traffic in broad daylight, you shouldn't be driving.
I'd be more inclined to agree that headlights should come on with the wipers.

Studies have shown that even in daylight, the eye is able to see vehicles with DRL farther off...

Studies have shown that when mandatory DRL is required accidents go down for a few years, this is when DRL cars are a rarity. As the number of cars with DRL become the majority the accident rate returns to normal rates. It seems that when all cars have their lights on NO ONE stands out and attracts the eye. We just don't see the ordinary, only the out of ordinary. You would be safer by having DRL be a drivers choice, thus those concerned could just use their lights in the daytime and since they are a minority they would stand out among all the other cars.

tHE ONE FACT THAT MANY OF YOU ARE FAILING TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION IS THIS - (stupid caps lock!)
The fact is that we are NOT all created equal. There are just too many people licensed to drive who are just too STUPID to use their headlights when it is dusk, early dawn, in the fog, raining, etc. I have seen it many times here where visibility is extremely limited, start to pull out, only to see another car bearing down on me with no FREAKIN" lights at the last minute!!! The only way to make it safer for me and my family to be on the roads is to take the control out of the hands of the individual and make it automatic. The car can't make the determination as to whether the driver is a moron or not. Therefore, the advent of DRLs.

Is it so hard to turn your own lights on? It gets a bit dark, you struggle to read the speedo maybe, turn the lights on. Not everything has to be automatic, it's making people lazy.
