DRL's

The fact is that we are NOT all created equal. There are just too many people licensed to drive who are just too STUPID to use their headlights when it is dusk, early dawn, in the fog, raining, etc. I have seen it many times here where visibility is extremely limited, start to pull out, only to see another car bearing down on me with no FREAKIN" lights at the last minute!!! The only way to make it safer for me and my family to be on the roads is to take the control out of the hands of the individual and make it automatic. The car can't make the determination as to whether the driver is a moron or not. Therefore, the advent of DRLs.
"Take control out of the hands of individuals and make it automatic." That is the single most dangerous thing I've ever heard.

There's nothing being lazy about it... I like utilitarian cars as well.

Point being, if the car wants to do something for me - why not let it (with the exception of shift... I want my clutch pedal)?

Some of us just like our toys. Going back and reading through this thread makes me wonder how many people chose the fortwo for its utilitarian factor, and perhaps that's where some of us differ in opinion. I bought all of the toys I could on my smart - call me a gadget nut.

I'd like to hope that I'll be in the position to pick up an MB S550 or S600 sometime down the road (hopefully not too far in the future.. heh)... now that's a car with gadgets.

You are so right. I wish we had a smiley for that.

The problem I see lately, and it seems to be with vehicles with EL gauges, is that people are driving around at night with no lights on, and apparently no clue because their gauge cluster is lit so brightly... it's like they are in la-la land.

This very afternoon, I tried to dimm the dash's lights. It works only for when the headlights are "on". Otherwise, the dash's are on "full". This CAN be misleading...

This is exactly what I was hinting at above.

That's the reason for the green "Lights On" telltale on the instrument cluster when the headlights are on.

Automated headlights seemed excessive to me in theory, but I'm finding it very practical. During my commute I pass through two tunnels and a bridge, all of which require headlights in the daytime.

The whole process of having the headlights come on and turn off 3-4 times during a work commute gives the illusion of precision.
