Best transmission (oil) for 451?

What is the best transmission fluid for the 451?

What is the factory spec weight?

Thanks!

Weight spec?

These are new cars here, I don't think anything has had a true weighted oil since the 90's. Everything uses AFT these days.

I hear that the tranny lube is

"Transmission oil used in the 2008 smart fortwo is 75w90 API GL4. The smart part number is A0019895103."

This is from another 451 web site where a tech checked with MB about what the hell BOT328 is (page 304 of the manual)

Interesting that the thread on the other forum (who's name dare not be spoken ) contains a post from a smart tech recommending against doing an initial low mileage oil change.

I saw that too

He (the tech) was blowing some smoke about the factory lube being special break in oil.... and you should not chage it early becuase you will screw up the breakin process,,,,,,,,then three pages later the same tech sez the factory stuff is Mobile 1... interesting BS IMO...BUT pure BS none the less

I have seen the 75w90 on more then one Brit site but can not remember if 450 or 451.... in any case I doubt the 451 would be any different...

I just checked the "NOT TO BE MENTIONED" site and here's what he (the tech) posted, in part:

"Transmission oil used in the 2008 smart fortwo is 75w90 API GL4. The smart part number is A0019895103."

Indeed. I've searched and found nothing to suggest that the factory oil is "special" or high-Moly blend. I'm changing mine out at 500Mi**as well as the tranny case (all synthethic, of course). I've done it on motorbikes for years and never suffered an engine or transmission problem from changing out fluids "...too early". Cheap insurance...

Transmission oil

So the transmissions in the Smart car use a gear oil and not ATF fluid?

Transmission is not an automatic so it doesn't use ATF. Transmission is a manual gear box hence the gear oil.
