I would use synthetic

Since it uses gear oil I would switch to synthetic(assuming it doesn't come from the factory with synthetic)gear oil. I used it in my manual Subaru and my 92 Dodge Stealth. In both cars you could sure tell the improvement the synthetic gear oil made.

I think you will have to search far and wide to find any 75W90 in conventional ...all my local places only have it in semi and full synth...in fact I will probably use the Mobil brand stuff just to keep smarty ville warranty folks happy...but in 300 miles it will get changed...fer sure fer sure...

I'll be falling-in about 200 miles behind Fred here - me, at 500, at the same time as the dino-to-synthetic engine oil crossover (dino goes in upon arrival at home from the delivery).

I am mindful that there is no transmission oil filter in smart, and there is a big difference between some small, logic-controlled servos and a good left foot and a good right arm to get things moving within the "box."

I wonder if Mobil 1 makes a full-synthetic gear oil in the correct viscosity. If so it should help gas mileage slightly.

Some cars use ATF with their manual transmissions, I had a 97 Ford Escort that used ATF with it's 5 speed manual.
Also some cars like Hondas use reformulated motor oil for their manual boxes or special automatic oil instead of the regular Mercon Dextron ATF for some automatic cars like Hondas and VW.

2.4 US quarts...or 2.3L by the book..... seems to me one of these is wrong

Buy 3 quarts any way

When I do mine I will post how to ensure it is full and NOT over full....

I plan to buy Mobile1 75W90

Does any one know yet if the smart centers are going to track the services by VIN in a computer liek we do for most every thing else here?

If so I may have my smart center drain and refill the trans just to get it logged in that it was done (NO not a requirement)

I have owned a few vehicles that have BIG potential problems and I usually over maintain them so if or when it grenades there is ZERO issue about proper lubrication or maintenance...

I got Ford to pop for 75% of a 4R100 replacment truck trany 1.5 years past warranty because how it died was a known problem, and I could prove it had not been abused or neglected

I suspect none of us want the expense of this tranny...mainly because I already know they want $8000 for the motor.....in a crate.... NOT installed

I just changed the trasmission oil with Mobil1 75w90 (for $8.98 a quart). I got 3 quarts and the trasmission takes 2.5.

I did around ~60 miles with new oil and everything is great.
