Big problems with My Smart (W450 transmission)

Hello there,
I have a Smart 4TWO from 2004, with 698 cmc, euro 4, with 71500 km, and I am having problems with the gear shifter, when I first start the car it works but after a while when I stop and re-start it engages the First Speed but it won't go in the first few seconds and after that it starts with big hit and noise, that happends in reverse gear too. The Gear shifter Fault light appears (the one with the three interrupted lines). I had an engine light on too , I had it fixed with the gas cap on-off, then other problems with the starter ...it would start. It starts only when I let it over night and the engine is cold.

I contacted the service center, they do not know.

I will be very happy to know if anybody had this problems...and how it is to be fixed.

Thanksss a lot.
Get Smart.

Sounds like the computer is trying to engage the gear without the clutch?
Some people had problems with the clutch solenoid. It would get the signal to mash the clutch, but it didn't move....

Good luck.

Let us know what you find.

Greetings from Malaysia. I have encountered several case similliar to your
problem. First of all, you have to send the car to authorised Smart dealer
to have your software of the transmission upgraded, need to get the SCN coding from your car and then the dealer need to send the code to Germany.

Once the new coding arrived, it has to be keyed in manually through the
Smart Diagnosis scan tool. At the same time, there is a new and upgraded clutch system available in the market- can't remember the part number, will try to post again if I find it. Then all the problems will be solved.

Cheers!!

Maybe one of the mods can move this to the 450 section for more exposure: In the meantime; for all things smart

This is a problem with smarts in markets where neither smart centre nor perhaps even Mercedes-Benz dealership is nearby. Quite a number of adjustments or repairs to the car's computer systems require proprietary equipment like the MBStar machine to reprogram the solution.

I have suggested to a Malaysian friend that he visit his Benz dealer and have them contact MB/smart headquarters in Germany for assistance or advice. This worked quite well for installing an air-conditioning update of which his local technicians had no knowledge at all.

Perhaps such a "three-cornered" solution could work for you...?

Good luck, cousins.
