I found the Bosch 3300 Premium “FILTEC” semi-synthetic filter cross-referenced from a Toyko Roki/Yamaha 5DM-13440-00 that Yamaha uses on their 660cc engines. The Yamaha filter is an exact clone of the smart OEM Tokyo Roki/Mitsu 1230A040. The 3300 is now made by Purolator, with a filter medium on par with the Mobil 1 M1-108 (semi-synthetic).
I don’t know the length of the 3300, but I have seen it described as a “smaller unit” (the M1-108 was described similarly at the same time). The M1-108 is slightly longer than the OEM 1230A040, but still does not extend below the bottom of the car.
Mobil and Purolator have both tested their M1-108 and L/PL 14612 filters respectively against the OEM, and found them equal or better (testing included filter capture capacity, filtration, flow rate, bypass valve spring rate, etc.). Unfortunately, the mid-grade L 14612 and the premium, full-synthetic PL 14612 filters are long enough to be slightly exposed under the car. I don’t know if Purolator/Bosch has similarly compared the 3300 to the OEM.
Based upon the above noted quantitative testing that I know has been done, I am presently using the M1-108, but the 3300 may prove to be just as appropriate.
N.B. I see that Bosch now specifically lists the 3300 for the W451 smart, and I have to assume that Purolator/Bosch has done testing, however, I would still want to verify the length. Didn't work out for the 14612s.
