There are new choices for brake pads now. Much cheaper than those imported pads. Check FrictionMaster website, they list pads for the smart fortwo. These can be ordered at your local auto parts store. I think they supply several store brands brake pads.
As Sato7 wrote - you don´t have to remove the calipers to paint them - just cover everything you don´t want to be painted with plastic and fix it with tape. Then paint the calipers cautiously.
