interested in the part# on the new sunshade and exactly how it differs from the original one. my dealer still insists that such a revision does not exist.

I was told that the sunshade is attached to the panoramic roof and that the only way to repair it is to REPLACE THE ROOF PANEL!

I've heard of a few that have had problems with them, but had no idea it was this big of a deal. Are they replacing ALL of them on the '08s?

Yes, I too am interested in a part number, and a photo of the "new design" if possible. That way I have some evidence to pass on to my smart dealer and see if they will update my sunshade.

Panda:

The sunshade is attached with bolts: removal of the panoramic roof is unnecessary in order to replace the sunshade. I am currently on sunshade #2, my original sunshade arrived broken from the factory!

this is a bit of misinformation or confusion.
the sunshade is attached to the roof via screws
it can be unscrewed and replaced without removing the roof
not everyone has problems or has had problems - but problems were plentiful enough to effect a rumored redesign of the unit.
presumably this is a rolling change in production and/or the warranty replacement should your OEM one fail (if it is of the old design and it is in fact broken)
there has been no mention that this will be a recall item.
smartusa (internet brands) presently denies the existence of such a revision to the sunshade.

I have taken mine out a couple of times.

the first time was to put the rear bars back in the track.
the second time was to fix the front bar holders that broke. I had to put rivits through the holder to fix it.
while it was out the second time I fully lubed it with the Sailkote and it works now. I contacted the dealer and he ordered a replacement.
I have yet to schedule it. Maybe next month when Smart #2 comes in.
