Burning smell when new?

I drove my smart home from the dealer today and after about 5 minutes there was an awful burning smell. Not clutch, but like cosmoline or a new exhaust burn-off. It was so strong that my son could smell it following me on the highway in our Mini.

Anyone else experience this when their car was new?

Yep, thats your smart new car smell. Both of ours did it. Won't last long, enjoy it while you can!

I had it too and emailed smart asking about it on Jan 27th., I finally received a phone call on April 10th - good thing it wasn't something burning. I think it is the oil films from assembly and machining, it left in a day or two.

Yep- I had it too with first drive home. Not to worry. Went away after about the first 100 miles.

It lasted a few weeks with mine. Especially strong in the rear. Three months later, its gone.

Thanks for the good news. Mine seems to be almost gone with only a couple dozen miles. Now to have the DOA air conditioning fixed.
