why is changing this filter even necessary after one year? How dirty are the ones people are taking out?

Don't think it is; the smart USA site DIY section says it's replaced at 10K miles.

yea its in the scheduled maintenance at 10k (or 1yr) along with Oil change, brake inspection, topping off fluids, check tire pressures ect. But they can get pretty dirty depending on where you drive, if you drive just regular city its not going to be bad. I've seen some where they drive to construction jobs through gravel and there just filthy.

Just replaced a buddy's (...also a m/c enthusiast--lotza toys) fortwo cabin filter. Purchased from Amazon--great value--delivered promptly--clearly an easy install--NO manufacturer warranty issues---Period. 'nuff said.

Changed mine out last night, 2009 Pure. Took not even 3 min, filter was picked up at Walmart along with oil and filter.
