Ok I have read all the for and against sides, does anyone know WHERE we can obtain a REMOTE STARTER for our Smart? To me it is NOT a question of being the right thing to do, it is for us. Even if it did void the warranty (although we know it won't) So right back to the question, does any one know where they can be ordered from?

Hey all. Just wanted to know that we are now installing remote start features to any and all smart 451's..
South Florida area.

Now this I don't get, why would south Florida need remote starters?

I understand needing it in a climate where you have a week where the temps dont reach 0 F.

Talk about environmental impact.

Maybe they are cooling off the interior, running the A/C on those warm days.

If you don't mind me asking:
How are you getting around the key's encoding chip?
I'd come to see you for an install, but you're kinda far from the frozen north! Probably by design!

In a nutshell, you cannot be denied warranty service for any component on your car due to the fact that you installed/added/used aftermarket products. The dealer/manufacturer must show that the installation/use of the product caused the failure or damage. So: just because you install a remote starter doesn't mean, for example, that your power windows are not covered under warranty (the item is unrelated and could not have caused the damage). Further: the only potential loss of warranty you would have would be if the remote starter damaged components of your smart car.

That aside, I do not recommend remote starters because they waste fuel and add pollution to the environment. Cars warm up much quicker when they are driven than when they idle. Often people with remote starters forget they started the car, leaving it running for 15 minutes or much longer. A better choice is heated seats. Get in the car, put on the seat heaters and drive. Of course, neither should be needed for many months!
As I agree with your point about polution, here it is not a matter of warming up the car, but cooling it down in the summer. Usually, you get in your car and crank the A/C and it might be cool by the time you get to where you need to go. Giving it 5 min to cool off a bit before entering would help. But yes, Im sure many people have forgotten they turned the car on.

If you want you car cooler in the summer, buy a California Pop Top, it is in essense a half car cover made of very light material, I used one all summer, it prevents heat soak and keeps the inside of the car from getting hot. They are available on the web and Ebay. No pollution and does not use any gas.
