Car Beeps Incessantly When In Gear?

i am having an intermittent problem with my car. it starts up and seems to run fine but when i put it in gear (D or R) there is an incessant beeping. the beeping stops when in N or P. seat belt is in use and there are no idiot lights on. the door locks do not engage automatically. the blinkers do not work properly (they light up but i do not hear the normal relay sound). otherwise car seems to drive normally.

this has happened three times now. the first time i corrected it (or so i thought) by disconnecting the battery. it happened again when i first started the car this am. an hour later, starting the car for a second time the beeping was gone. 15 minutes later starting the car for a third time the beeping has come back.

could this be a bad ecu?

Check that the doors are completely closed - it sometimes takes some umph as the car is very tight. They can be ajar, but look like they are closed. A common culprit is the passenger's seatbelt buckle caught in the jamb. That will also cause the cabin light to stay on.

You bring up a good point. This car does not have a traditional flasher - the lights are controlled by the SAM, and the "click" you hear is computer generated. It prioritizes sound output - a door ajar in gear is more important than a turn signal, so it sounds the more important alarm.

Is the seatbelt fastened all the way, and if you have something on the passenger seat, you need to fasten that seatbelt too if it's heavy enough.
