Changed Transmission Oil today

Pretty easy job to drain and refill. I used Red Line 75-90 synthetic GL-4 rated. Got it on-line for about $12 qt.
Only had 3350 miles on the car but the old stuff was pretty nasty.

And of course I dropped the motor cover latch key (whatever its called) down in the motor, never to be seen again.
Has anyone come up with an alternate substitution?
What do they cost at MB?

Indeed.
So much for the teaser. Why was the fluid "nasty"? Do you notice any post-change differences in shifting/sound levels? Anything?

If you are talking about the engine trunk cowling latch, I remember seeing it for sale somewhere on one of the supporting vendor sites.

I've been meaning to ask...

Does anyone else notice a slight gear whine in 4th???

It is very slight.. you really have to have the radio / a/c off and windows up..
but there is a whine while under power in 4th.. that I don't hear in any other gear..
Anyone else have this???

Louis

NO... like I said.. it is a very FAINT whine..
the other noises from the passenger seat would completely cover it up

Welllll, yes, only in 4th while decelerating in a very quite neighborhood, music and fan motor off, and being very discriminating in what I'm listening for.
A very slight, higher frequency whine, most people would not notice.
FWIW, has lessened since my RP lube service.

Oh yeah: Good one, forestacademy.

TMACK: The "nasty" gear oil had a silvery shiney sheen to it. I've done a lot of cycle gear boxes that use gear oil and motor oil and the first change is much the same. After that, on cycles anyway, the gear oil looked pretty clean when changed.

Haven't had it on the road yet to see if it made any noticable diff
but am not expecting much as the transmission has been smoother than I expected, compared to the 3 used ones I drove before buying this one recently. Probably I've just learned how to operate it more smoothly. If I see/hear and change in the transmission, I'll report it.
