The maintenance checks is where they make some money off of you in my opinion. Actually they have a 3 page checklist that they go through to check various things on the car such as lights, fluid levels, etc, etc. Changing the engine air filter is not one of them, but changing the pollen filter on the inside air system is as well as changing the oil. The total cost of my visit OTD was $198.61. The breakdown of my charges is below:
Oil Change Mobil 1 0W40 w/filter $42.25
Combination Filter (pollen) $39.88 (must be a heck of a filter)
Windshield Washer fluid $5.98 (they must have needed a new bottle)
Labor $98.00
Oh, and a shop environmental compliance charge $5.00 (oil recycle I guess)
Tax $7.50
At the labor rate of $98 an hour I elected to just purchase the engine air filter ($18.69) and change it myself.
I had asked before I made the trip and they said around $140.00, but, they forgot to include the pollen filter.
Oh, they also indicated on the last page of the checklist (which I got a copy of) that they adjusted the air pressure of the front tires to 33lbs front and 36lbs rear. I noticed on the way home that it rode a little rougher, so after I let the car sit overnight in the garage to cool I checked them the next morning and they all indicated around 40lbs (I have one of the more expensive bellows style tire gauge). I put them back at 29 front, 36 rear (rides much smoother). Don't know why they had more air than they indicated they had put in. I guess gauge differences.
