at 14,100 miles, my engine light came on...
not the gas cap... i'll have to call the dealership to see if they can fit me in - another day off from work! I had to be separated from my car for a month after my apartment company plowed my car in a snowstorm. I had extensive damage on the panels and to get any parts from the idiotic dealer in Mass is a HASSLE. I love my car, but I don't like to deal with my dealer.

I'll post more...

As it turned out - it was the gas cap. After a couple of days, the engine checklight turned off by itself...

thanks to all of you

My engine light came on today coming home from work(22,780 miles on car now) and thanks to all of you, I did check my gas cap to make sure it was tight. Light did not go out, read some more and decided I could handle the battery unhooking and Viola it is out for now!!!! thanks.

I too was dreading the time off from work, to the far away dealership. Especially after the 20K check up! Where you automatically get charged for fluids they do not put in. I got them to undo the wiper washer charge, but I can't say i believe they put all new brake fluid in for $18.00. My 20k service cost $328.00! They didn't even fill in my service log or give me a new owners manual. I did however get a free muffin, yay?

I got the check engine light

I only have 118 miles on the car and the engine light came on as I was making a turn. I haven't filled up the car since I left the dealership and theres only one dealership in Louisville, Kentucky that sells these. I called Smart Center Louisville and they told me since its not flashing it could jus be a loose gas cap. I'm going to take it over there in 3 hours. I work 3rd shift at UPS so thats why I'm up so early. I love the car though . I'm 18 and this is the first car that I've ever bought.

My check engine light just came on and now i am afraid to drive it, don't want to cause any harm, but sounds like most of the time this happens it is nothing big. I have had my smart for 2 years and this is the first time the check engine light or anything has gone wrong with my smartie, great little cars.

You guys! My nearest smart dealer is in Seattle, about 500 miles away! My engine light is on now, and I'm trying to find a local shop with the right type of scanner to find out what the deal is. With the poor warranty (12000), I've been on my own for a while. I have 42000 miles on my 2008 Passion! Use it every day for my 50 mile commute, and take it on cross country trips. Drive it all winter in Montana without difficulty. I use my Subaru with all-wheel drive and studded tires when it's too icy. I'llbe in Arizona in MArch for Spring Traning and hope to find a dealer near Peoria, AZ.

Ever since I switched to Premium fuel, I have experienced the check engine light. My dealership told me not to worry and that I must drive it on the highway to have it reset.

This is becoming disconcerting though. I make sure I hear a click when replacing the gas cap and still it will light up within the week.

Go to an auto parts store and have them check the code. Sounds to me like they are giving you a load of dealer pie. They can reset it at the dealer. you could also unhook the neg battery post to reset it.
