Clutch question

Please advise:

I ended up buying an extended warrantee from Warrantee Direct, 5 year, 100,000 miles.

It says that it will not cover: Manual transmission clutch assembly, friction clutch disc and pressure plate, throw out bearing, manual and hydraulic linkages....

Are these the kind of things that just need to be replaced after awhile like tires and batteries, shocks, brakes, etc?? Or is this an exclusion that I should be worried about. I have 45 days left to cancel without penalty.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Meaux

They are normally considered a service part like the other items you list. That said you should have reasonable expectation to have it last the life of the car. Hope that helps

Yes, that helps. What you are saying is that replacing those things is part of normal maintenance for a car, or they might last a long time.
Right?

Most of my cars have a manual. Clutches last the life of the car for me. a 5.0 mustang with over 300 drag strip runs on it 10 years on the autobahn still has the original clutch at 250k miles. You can ruin one in less than an hour, hence no warranty. We will have to see what happens to our smarts.

"It says that it will not cover: Manual transmission clutch assembly..."

Well right there things could get complicated and, if it were me, I'd want that cleared up since this is not a manual transmission as the statement implies where you control the clutch directly. It is rather a gray area and I would think a true manual tranny would be covered differently then a car with sequential shifting - after all you cannot miss-shift from 5th to 2nd for example, or manually pop the clutch for a hard start, etc. The direct control of the clutch is the reason it is not usually covered, however with other sequential manuals like BMW's SMG the transmission and related bit are covered more like an automatic since the car's computer plays a part in it plus the driver mistakes/abuse simply cannot happen in the same way it can with a clutch pedal.

For the absolute last word check with the company that wrote the coverage.

Hi meaux61 - I was wondering if you asked and got any clarification about the transmission coverage? It really is not a manual in the traditional sense and the coverage seems inaccurate, perhaps insufficient, and the statements vague in that case.

Hi SmartAzz,

I did ask, but the person I talked to was confused. SHe said to call back tomorrow and talk to her manager. I will try to call back and ask.
I want to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, SmartAzz, and everyone,

I finally got hold of someone named Steve at Warranty Direct and he told me that it is covered because it is internal and they consider it like an automatic transmission. He gave me his extension for the future if I need it.
