Clutch slip concern

Hey i would like some of you to conduct an experiment for me if you could. When you drive your smart in automatic mode, slow to about 6 MPH or so and then give about 40% throttle and see what it does. Mine seems to hesitate between 1 and 2nd gear really bad. then after it decides it slips the clutch really bad. It also slips during shifting while going around a corner. I have had in the dealer and the tech guy noticed it as well. I just want to see if maybe i can get the tranny reprogammed if i have a lot more smarts that do this.

Mine does it, 08 with original programing. I don't think the clutch wear will be an issue, yes it slips but the load on the clutch is fairly light. It is anoying when it decides to downshift to first for a second and then back to second.

Is your car an '08 or '09? If it's an '08, have you had the 2.0 upgrade done? If the tech noticed something out of the ordinary, have them reflash the transmission. It should be a quick and simple warranty job.

Not all of us have the same preferences. My auto mode happens to work very well, especially after the 2.0 re-flash. It may not feel like a true automatic, but it does well with the power that's available to it.

It's not a skirt it's a kilt

I must admit, my auto mode is rubbish, it changes either too early or too late, if you use the kickdown it sounds like the engine is going to come through the floor and it slurs the gearchange, it is by far the worst auto mode in any car I have had, but I love it as a manual with the flappy paddle steering wheel, I think I am a F1 driver, and I love to get it right and get great gearchanges just at the right time, it is by far the most enjoyable car I have ever had, but only in manual.
I thought I would just justify why I am so against the auto mode, but as you said, different strokes!!!!!!

6mph was really bad for me too, now it's not so bad after the 2.0 upgrade. If you give it a different amount of throttle, you can change if and where it shifts. Or, put it in manual mode when you're going that slow. Giving mine < 20% throttle would tempt it to shift to 2nd at 5mph, but not so much anymore. It'll hold higher RPMs in 1st and 2nd now.
