Auto lights and wipers are nonsense, IMO. I'm getting mine without them, if possible.

I got my Smart Car with the comfort package - not because I ordered it - it came with the "orphan" I bought. Though I would not have ordered the comfort package myself, I'm now glad I have it because the auto wipers are nice. I don't like fidgeting with the intermitent wipers as the rain changes - the rain sensor does it for me - very nice!

As someone else posted, I got the comfort package because my orphan came with it. Personally I find the rain gauge quite annoying (it is in the visual field -- why can't it be higher and behind the mirror?) and I would be much happier with a dumb intermittent or variable-speed wiper. I never use the auto lights -- just my habit I guess, since I never had auto lights before. The high setting on the heated seats is too hot for me, but not for others. I have to admit that it is pretty nice to help you get warmed up faster when it is cold outside. Having a cabrio it might be more important to have the seat-heating option.

I just received this email from Smart USA:
Dear smart fortwo Owner,

We have had reports of batteries being drained within an 8 to 12 hour period in Model Year 2009 smart fortwos which are equipped with the comfort package option. This appears to happen when both the rain sensing windshield wipers and auto-headlamps are left in automatic mode when the car is not running.

To help avoid a dead battery, please always turn your wipers and headlamps to the full off position when parking your car for any period of time. The safety of your vehicle will not be affected and your headlamps and wipers will operate normally in any position when driving. Note -- For full off positions, the headlamp switch should be rotated fully clockwise to the off (O) position – the wiper stalk should be one click up from the bottom position.

Your smart center dealership will advise you as soon as possible of the availability of the upgrade which they will install at your convenience.

We apologize for the inconvenience in needing to return your car to the dealership for this work.

Sincerely,

The smart USA Team
I can tell you - I had this update done and it works. I have been monitoring my power levels with my scan gauge and all is well now. They did tell me it would cause the mirrors to stay warm now, not a big deal for me... The good news is now I leave my wipers and lights in auto with no issues. My smart is fine... 350 miles - no issues.

2009 Upgrade to 2008?

I wonder if the upgrading to eliminate the excessive battery drainage is actually retrofitting the 2009's to the 2008's?
The 'hint' was when you said it make your mirrors stay warm.
I have a 2008 and use my auto features on my comfort package and haven't had any battery issues.
Just curious.

Sounds about right. I just pulled the fuse for the mirrors on my 08 as mine is kept in the garage and it will be in the 60's today
