any thoughts on my decision not to go back to dealer??
Im with you. Why go to the dealer? Ive just completed my 3rd oil change. Thats right, im at 30,000 miles already. It is the easiest oil change I have ever done. Cabin air filter is super easy to replace. The only thing I have yet to do is replace the air filter and spark plugs. And ill be doing that in the next couple of weeks. The smart is an easy car to do maint on. Dont be afraid to do it if you feel ok doing it.

Good Luck!

My 10K is only weeks away. I'm tempted to return to the dealer for the 2.0 upgrade and inspection. Are they going to address the quirky nature of the '08 Auto wipers/headlights?

Then again, it's a 600 mile overnight trip. Seems pretty ignorant to add 6% to the odometer and spend two days (one of them a work day) just for a maintenance journey. I'll likely study up on the oil change and buy the necessary tools. It's a good thing the oil change is so easy, it'll be my first.

When I needed a headlamp switch (left pod) Smart Sugarland tried to charge me $147.. and they made me drive to the dealership (over a hundred miles) because they didn't take credit cards over the phone. I was so p&*@# off that I called Dallas after I got back and they had the part for $99 and they didn't need my credit card to order the part. When the part came in, they faxed me the form and I filled out my CC info and they shipped it same day. I even talked to a little jerk at Sugarland that was in charge of parts...this is where I bought my car, and told him about the better service in Dallas. Same deal in Round Rock too, by the way.

I feel like I got a new car for my $181.00 (tax incl.)

Of course, in addition to the 10,000 mile service, I got the 2.0 upgrade (incl. battery), a new radio (mine had the "never off" defect), a new roof shade (mine was sticking all the time) and a car wash. Oh, and a cold bottle of water waiting for me in the car.

Plus, service people who come to you with the paperwork rather than yell your name or number out (I felt like I was being greeted by a doorman), nice leather seats in the waiting area, a desk to set up my laptop, good coffee, big screen tv, current magazines and the morning paper.

There's definitely something to be said for Smart dealerships sharing space with MB dealerships. Where else would the service area for a $13,000 car be so inviting?

BTW, is it just my imagination, or is the coin holder on the gear shift console new?
