Really? Can you elaborate on your experience with the air filter and not starting?

Due to the placement of the air intake the engine air filters can get pretty dirty. If they become to caked with dirt it can choke the vehicle out.

Couple of questions.

1) Did the vehicle die while driving? Or just not restart after you shut off?

2) Do you smell fuel? Remove the engine cover. Pretty easy to notice on these vehicles if fuel is pumping.

3) Is your vehicle under warranty. If it is just have to towed to the dealer and let them fix it.

We did have a smart with the fuel pump seal leaking and had the same problem as you are having. Do you have 3 bars on the dash by the way????

My car is broken down right now and out of warranty. The closest smart facility is 50 miles away, so I took it to an independent German Repair shop last night, who has all the test equipment. This morning they are claiming the fuel pump is failing.

The car did not quit while driving, it just wouldn't start. I heard a groaning sound upon startup, but I thought that was the secondary air-injection motor dying. Apparently, it's the fuel pump! So I have 2 questions:

1) can anything seem like the fuel pump is dead?
2) is there a program from smart to fix these out of warranty?

My car stops, mostly when i stop at a red sign and olly 30/40 minutes later it starts again.

Smart service says its the transmission, can this be the real cause?
