Back to the Question

Hopefully we’ll soon have some official elaboration on the smart manual guidance.

Sent to Ken Kettinbeil, smart HQ, Bloomfield Hills:
“Pages 314 and 318 of the 2009 Operator’s Manual refer to summer and winter windshield washer concentrates. Page 318 describes mixing ratios of the two concentrates between 1:100 and 1:1. My supporting smart center indicates that smart USA does not stock any such concentrates, thus the s/c dispenses locally procured, ordinary, pre-mixed, winterized fluid.

What specific concentrates does the manual refer to? Are they the summer and winter concentrates included on Mercedes-Benz Sheet 371.0 titled “Windshield washer fluid concentrate Sheet 371.0 For all vehicle models from Mercedes-Benz and smart,” p/n 001 986 44 71 (summer) and p/n 001 986 45 71 (winter)?”

Received from Ken K.:
“Hello Dave – I am checking into this for you.“

And the answer is:

"Hi Dave –

I heard back from my service manager today. Because the owner’s manual is used in multiple countries the copy below reflects a “global” recommendation.

You may use any windshield washer solvent in the United States. Simply follow the instructions on the bottle you purchase.

I hope this helps.

Ken Kettenbeil"

So, with pages 314 and 318 not written for us, we are on our own. We can always use the 40ml bottles of M-B p/n 001 986 80 71 17, mixed with either a gallon of plain water or a gallon of winter pre-mixed. The concentrate is a cleaning fluid not an antifreeze and it really does a good job. About $3.
