The screw hold down for the engine compartment lid on my car has a heavy wire loop attached, this swivels and allows the screw to be turned (with some difficulty and pain). It's especially difficult to secure the lid. Anther car at same dealership has a plastic handle on the screw. Any idea if this was a running change in production? The design of mine doesn't exactly encourage frequent inspection of oil level, etc.

Does it look like a large, spring-loaded, pan-head screw with a "D"-ring, and two bayonet slots in the shank insteads of threads (a "Dzus" fastener)? If so, the "D"-ring fastener can be replaced with a slotted-head Dzus which easily twists on-and-off with a special tool (or a screwdriver or coin if you feel like yammying it up).
Is there some sort of strap or prop rod to hold open the bay door, Hal?
No, Dave...
Well, I guess I'll have to sprout a third arm then to check the oil...
Ok, Dave...
on the upper right corner of the carpet flap that hooks into a small latch to hold it up. Then you simply undo the Zeus fastener that holds down the gasketed metal engine cover panel/plate and remove the cover from the vehicle and whalah...there's the engine in all its glory!
What's all this about 3 arms to check the oil???
OK, so carpet gets hooked to hold up
Fastener on cover is released...cover raised...
Is there anything to hold the cover up?
It is easily removed from between several locating clips on the front of the engine bay opening.....You just slide the cover right off and take it out of the car completely.
It's a pretty simple and inexpensive way to design it...really.
