Engine Malfunction Indicater light

I was 22 miles from home, on my way to the Oregon smart meet and greet in Pacific City when the "Engine Malfunction Indicator" light came on. I checked the manual and it said not to drive it and to call the dealer. I called smart center portland. The dealer said call smart usa. I did, they arranged a tow and now I wait till the service center opens on Monday.

What could it be? My lil monster only has 2800 miles. I HAS to be minor right?

I was told by a mechanic at MB that as long as the light is orange and not red and flashing, that it is ok to drive. Only when it's red and flashing should you stop and call for a tow.

The manual doesn't say anything about red flashing, only solid, which mine was. It aslo says contact the dealersip immediately. Oddly, it says that in some states the law requires you get it to a "workshop" right away.

After I posted I found this thread and it looks like there's enough reason to get it to the dealer.Check Engine Light

It will probably be a quick fix and I probably could have driven it, but I didn't have a lot of resources out in the country to figure it out. Only a phone to make the call.

you are correct, the manual does not mention a flashing red light. I am only telling you what was told to me when I called the dealer after my light came on.
It goes in the shop on Monday. I am still driving it and have had no obvious problems.

Get a scangauge for your car it will give you the error codes. You can check on the net to see if it is a big problem.

Or take it to an Autozone type shop where they'll plug in a code scanner for free and read the codes. Ignore whatever diagnosis they give, just get the code # and look it up on this forum. Smart codes may not match other cars' code... most will match, but if it doesn't, you'll be thoroughly confused.

Post the code here and I'm sure one of us will help.

just an update on my engine light:
Took it in on Monday the 23rd.
The report shows that they found a code for secondary air injection malfunction. Found fault in switchover valve. Replaced valve. Cleared Codes.
All's well........

I just came back from Autozone. PO410 (secondary air injection). Had come on two weeks ago. Same Codes. Did some disg of the Sec air system to find the pump, hoses and EGR all working. Is the switchover valve the electronic switch that allows vacuum to operate the EGR valve?? This is warrantiable right? Trying to hold off on the 3 hour drive to the dealership.

Well, this is odd. I'm reading a lot about this 410 code, but the service guy told me that was not a problem. Said it was Code 457 or 459; he couldn't remember (). So, he cleared it, tested it and that was that. He said the EMI light can come on if the gas cap is loose or if the gas is over filled. Since Oregon doesn't allow self fueling, and service guy said cap was tight, I'm guessing the gas jockey topped it off and it was just too much.
