Engine in new Smart

As I understand it, the new Smart for US import uses a Mitsubishi engine. Is this engine new? Is it used in anything else? I'd be curious to know what history this engine has.

Here is some early developmental information:

In 2004 it was designated IL3: http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/cor...004/16E_09.pdf

By 2006 it was in the 3B2 family: http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/cor...006/18e_16.pdf

The smart engine (3B2?) is now 999cc.

I think it will be a success. Both of my cars are Mitsubishi's and and proud of their dependability.

It must be a variant of the 3B2 family, as the pdf indicates that engine has a turbocharged, intercooled engine. Can you imagine all that plumbing on a Smart?

Some Euro-available engines are turbo-charged (84PS). Ours won't be.

The current 450 smarts are 699cc turbo intercooled. It all fits nicely in the back.
