Engine noise

While warming up the engine for an oil change, I noticed a periodic noise, kind of a ratcheting sound. I looked and it seemed to happen in sync with a rotating part on the right side of the engine. This part is a small wheel with an arm attached to it that rotates back and forth. It possibly activates something that is causing the noise. Any help with what this is would be much appreciated. I would like to have some information before taking the car in (if necessary). If my description is lacking I can take a photo and post it. Thanks!

The photo would help for those of us who haven't spent time with their nose in the engine compartment. Or perhaps point to where it is on an illustration of the engine.

Is there such a diagram available? I would love to learn more about the layout of the engine.

Page 30 of this manual appears to be a pretty decent cutaway from one angle. Other info in the manual is helpful as well.

Thanks for the link. I think I may have a problem with the cooling system as the reading I get from my scanguage has begun to swing widely. Having the manual really helps.

Nice PDF John... I saved that 39 Meg file to my computer... I think I will put a copy on my Thumb Drive, so I have it with me on the road just in case...<:-))
