I bought another washer from the dealer who thought I was a bit nuts for doing so. He said the washer is reusable.
I think he's probably right since the old washer looked just like the new one - I couldn't see anything that looked crushable. Both the new one and the one I took off the filler plug looked like plain, solid copper colored washers to me.

Mine didn't look at all like it needed to be replaced, so I reused it.

I took a smart washer to the local Mitsubishi dealer to see if it might be a standard Mitsu part - it isn't. They didn't consider it a "crush" washer either.

My drain plug also seemed to have been installed by a Sumo at the factory. After the first oil change I tried not to set it so tight, just snug. At the second oil change it was again so tight that it took a piece of pipe on a breaker bar to get it off. All I can think of is the hot cast aluminum sump expanding and squeezing the plug.

This tool is available at the car parts places for about five bucks. It is the same theory of operation as the official smart tool. I got the 65mm/67mm, 3/8" ratchet drive size (it fits both the 67mm OEM filter and the 65mm Mobil 1 M1-108).

For anyone who has changed there oil/filter i have a question , is it possible to remove the drain plug using a 15/16 SAE socket ?? The 24mm socket is .9449 and the 15/16 socket is .9375 . I don't have my smart yet but i was just wondering if the 15/16 socket will do the job. Will someone try and see if the 15/16 socket will fit and let everyone know. Thanks

Yes ... I'm on oil change #2 with just over 10k on Gidget, I just used the 15/16" socket about 3 minutes ago.

The facets on the oil drain plug are slightly tapered. Twenty-four MM is best, but 15/16" will work, engaging a bit further out.

Thanks Old smart, that is good news, i'll try 15/16 when ever i get my smart and make my first oil/filter change. If the 15/16 looks like it might roll the edges i'll purchase a 24mm socket before i'll damage the drain plug. thanks again
