so can anyone provide further details re: the flashing wrench display?
the owner's manual provides a minimalist description: basically it says when the wrench comes on, you'll need to get service in about a month. it also describes the process to "clear" the wrench. pushing the left-hand display button seems to make the wrench disappear, but the wrench display returns the next time you start the car.
is this display just an annoyance to remind you about the 10K service interval? (my smartmobile has about 7500 miles right now). does the dealer turn the wrench off permanently after service? can i permanently turn off the wrench with my scanguage?
in other words, should i worry about this wrench display, or is it simply a short-term annoyance?
thanks in advance for any clarity you can provide.
It's simply a service reminder. Yes, when done, it should not come back.
As far as having only 7,500 miles, it is not the reason. It must be that you're close to a year of ownership. The reminder also keeps track of the time, and will come on when you're near either 10,000 miles or a year, whichever comes first.

Ah so, Grasshopper...it will be a year of ownership next month!...that explains it...thanks for the reassuring response.
You can also turn it off yourself - I don't go to the dealer (more than 4 hours away) for simple oil changes. The only reason I go is for warranty work. The steps to turn it off are:
Switch on the ignition to position 1.
Select maintenance indicator within 4 sec by double tapping the instrument cluster button,
keep it held down on the second press.
Switch the ignition to position 0 (off) within 10 sec.
Switch ignition on.
Keep the instrument cluster button held down for another 10sec.
In that time, the spanner symbol on the LCD will flash and eventually reset.
It's tricky because the timing has to be just right - it took me about 4 tries.
My dealership wouldn't reset the flashing wrench display unless they preformed the maintenance themselves (at well over $200.00...yea, right). After reading on this site and a few tries, was able to reset it myself. Thanks for the information from those that posted in here!!!
didnt work for me and the evil site says then go to dealer.
do not pass go, do not collect $200
Sorry it didn't work for you! It did take me a few tries. For me taking it to the dealer not only means a long trip but also motel bills, dog boarding, etc. I would have figured out a way! - sheureka
Ours just went off a few days ago...6500 miles and a couple weeks shy of one year from delivery.

So the only thing actually replaced at the first maintenance is oil, oil filter and the AC charcoal filter? (in addition to looking over things) Smart just changed the oil < 1000 miles ago, so I wonder if its worth the $100 or so just for the charcoal filter and to have my service booked stamped, or whether to clear the indicator myself. Hmmmm....
