This might be a little better photo, showing how the oil pickup is integral to the drain plug. http://www.seriouswheels.com/2007/20...-1920x1440.htm

I would be worried that due to the location of the drain plug, some vandal would just open the valve draining all my oil. Are they lockable?

There is a way to retrofit the Fumoto valve. Basically, drill and tap the current drain plug. That's how I tap for my oil temp. Choose a fumoto valve of say about 10mm thread.

Its much easier for a vandal to stick a big screwdriver in your filter, but I don't think that will happen either.

do we really have vandals sabotaging oil drain plugs? seriously?

maybe i should think about relocating my tire valves to the other side of the wheel so their accessibility doesn't lead to temptation! lol.

Have been using a "Fumoto" drain valve on my Honda Ridgeline for three years now and really like it. I slip a short hose on the nipple and just drain the used oil into an used one gallon plastic jug for disposal...no mess or cleanup. But as for the smart...don't think I'll try it due to the oil plug attached screen.

hmm. that is unfortunate.
i think if i lived in a place in fear of someone draining the oil out of my car for spite, i'd have to consider relocating to another place where social morals were such that it would discourage senseless things like that.

i can't say that i've ever even heard of draining the oil on a car out of spite. i think here if anyone were caught doing something like that they'd probably be beaten fairly severely. vandalism of any kind to a car doesn't tend to happen very often. and i wouldn't think that the addition of a fumoto valve to the oil pan would increase the liklihood of that particular type of vandalism by any measurable degree. i'm not sure anyone would even know you had the valve installed.

anyway, if you did indeed want to put a valve on the oil drain, i don't think fear of vandalism is reason enough, in and of itself, to not do it.

The worry here is that the drain plug is easily accessible on our smart. It doesn't really take much effort compared to most cars out there.

I don't plan on installing the valve cos my drain plug already has a sensor.
