After a dealer reflash and a few tanks of fuel that were still showing 7/8, mine seems to have finally worked itself out. I follow the exact method quoted here, and then wait another 30 seconds or so before switching the car on, and have had my gauge read full each time now. I've also started using MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) just as I've done with my other cars, and perhaps this has helped lubricate the sending unit a bit. As an aside, I do seem to notice slightly better fuel economy after beginning the MMO usage, but I haven't tracked it consistently enough to be certain.

Has anybody noticed the sticker on the gas filler lid which says "Do not top off"?

There's actually a reason for this. You WILL soak the carbon canister in the vent and fixing it will be expensive.

There is a difference between just verifying that the tank is full by letting the fuel settle and one attemp at filling slowly again til pump clicks off again and doing this multiple times and overfilling tank. On my truck I have been able to put 3-4 extra gallons in by forcing it in. I will never try this in the smart. I have yet to have one issue with the way that I verify I have indeed filled the tank.

And does your truck have a sticker on the fuel lid saying "Do not top off"?

Didn't think so...

Mine's sometimes 7, sometimes 8. Quiktrip's slow notch seems to fill it perfectly every time, cause when I attempt one last squeeze in, it just clicks. Shows all 8 bars. Other places like Shell and Phillips have a faster "slow" notch, and I get a bit in on the extra squeeze in and then end up with 7. As long as it gives me mostly accurate, then I'm fine. I don't run my tanks down... usually fill at 1/4 tank, so it doesn't matter much to me.

After it clicks off on mine it will also pump almost none in untill it clicks off the second time. Like I said in my previous post the second click just verifies full tank. Every once in a while the pump may click off early if another pump causes a pressure fluctuation.

The procedure I quoted from Duckhunter comes straight from smart itself as their recommend fill method. It just isn't included in our US owners manuals (which seem to lack a bunch of other info that the European manuals include). Following the procedure won't damage anything.

That's interesting. Did your dealer tell you this, or did you see it in the European owner's manual?
