Gas gauge still showing 7/8 full after fillup

Hello everyone,

Had a weird situation this morning and wondering if anyone else has seen anything like it. This was my second fillup in the Smart. I filled her up and topped off. And when I got back in the car she showed as having 7/8th of a tank, one bubble gone. I got back out and tried to put more gas in. About 1/3 of a gallon later I have gas just about to spill out. Get back in and start her up, same thing. Showing 7/8th of a tank.

Has anyone seen this before? I figure I'll give it one more fillup, if I still have the problem I'll call the dealer.

Calling the dealer will not work, this is a common problem and the re flash for this is not out yet. Also you are not suppose to top off.

I had a similar problem. After 1000 miles it went away.

MY first 7/8 tank indicator problem came at about 12K miles. It happened after I had my first CEL which was due to a loose gas cap. I am still having this problem about 3/4 of the time since then.

I never top up beyond the first click, and never try to, and the gas stations I go to are my favorite holes.

I am at a loss as to why my tank cannot be filled 'FULL' anymore. Could it be the gas overflow mechanism being 'damaged' due to that one time loose gas cap instance?

In any case, I don't really worry about it. I just fill up when it's low.

I had my gauge "normalized" last Friday and it now reads full instead of 7/8 on full tank. I think they reloaded the software or something like that so I'm not sure what you mean about it not being available.

Hey try pumping fast to get up most of your tank full then stop pumping and wait about a minute then pump ultra slow till pump turns off. I have been doing that trying to keep this issue at bay and gas gazers aren't a good thing.

Brand new off the showroom floor yesterday, read 7/8s when I left the dealership and reading 7/8s after filling up this morning. I don't think it's a big deal, and presumably the dealer can correct at my 10k mile service.

It is possible that you are not actually filling the tank. The following comes from pg 169 of the Euro 451 Operating Instructions:

"ˇ If you wish to fill the fuel tank to its max-
imum level, wait 30 seconds after the first
switch-off. Then start filling the tank with
fuel again until the fuel pumpnozzle switches
off."

I had early switch-offs (at 7/8ths) on my first two re-fills. None since doing it in two steps as above.

BTW, no matter how I try, I cannot get an auto shut-off nozzle to overflow the filler neck nor fill the tank to more than 8.7 U.S. gallons total. I might be able to with jerry cans, though it shouldn't be done.

I waited 2+ minutes between my first and second fillups. No dice, still at 7/8th's. And I always use the slow setting on the gas pump to fill the smart.

Thanks guys!
