get a scan gauge2, i've had one in my smart for 6 months, i've improved my mileage by 15% with this device, you can see what your smart is doing, and "outsmart" it.
P.S. i got 61.6mpgs with 87 octane gas

Actually I used to get my best tanks on my old Honda Insight when I broke down and just went off of my "trip mileage". What I am talking about - some cars have a tripmeter A and Tripmeter B (the Insight even had more than that) so I could break down each commutes mileage while still maintaining a tripmeter for the entire tank. If I tried to maintain the highest average for each trip then the tank would come out phenomenal. With that car my best commute was 110 miles at 105mpg. The tripmeter in that car was dead on accurate.
This same thing can be done with the use of a scangauge - just use the "current" screen. Unfortunately I intentionally keep my scangauge tank average set low, for example if it says I'm getting 39.5mpg, I'm most likely getting 41-42mpg.
Oh, rural New Jersey and 58mpg.
I DO BELIEVE THAT! Those rural roads in Jersey are perfect for hypermiling up there! I always get MUCH better mileage when I'm driving around up there than compared to here.
