I drive mostly rural roads up and down quite a few hills (usually shift down to 4th gear for those)with an avg. speed is 45 on the roads I drive to and from work. I put premium gas in but found that 93 octane gets better mileage. also started driving in manuel by my 3rd tank (you will see by the numbers that it has improved the gas mileage).
1 tank - 225 miles 6.76 gal = 33.3 mpg
2 - 258 m 6.78 gal = 38.1 mpg
3 - 226 m 5.45 gal = 41.5 mpg
4 - 247 m 5.85 gal= 42.2 mpg
5 - 304 m 7.125 gal = 42.7
I drive mostly alone, except when I have to take my friends for rides in my cool car... by they way his name is Buzz (yes he's yellow and black)

I will mention I filled up at a local station and put in "there" premium and noticed that my fuel gage was going down a lot faster than previous so I filled up at half which was only 93 miles. This time I made sure I used 93 octane, I finished out the tank with 42.1 miles per gallon, so I won't be going back to the local station for my premium gas anymore.... I think it was definitely not good gas....

1st fill up today... had .7 gallons on the countdown, filled w/7.654 gallons. 261.5 miles, so about 34 mpg. We'll see how this next one goes now that I've got a scangaugeII installed to help teach me to drive more efficiently...

My last four fillups ... 42, 40, 38, 39 mpg. They are all work commutes of about 75 miles one way, three times a week.

I think I may have found my average mpg..

I just got over 300 miles 302 to a tank full. Took the gas guage all the way down to 0. I had some fun with Squirtle going speeds I had no business doing. So this last fill up, number 10, I got 302 miles on 8.488 gallons for 35.578 mpg.

i'm approaching 1700 miles, most tanks are 41-42mpg in freezing-sub freezing temps, 75/25 cty/hwy sams club 93 oct, one tank with 50/50 driving hit 46mpg. with the summer coming and trips on the highway for weekends, i hope to get 50mpg or so. mostly single passenger riding.

Broke 40 mpg today. 40.4mpg!

So far, 37.7, 37.2, 35.7 and 40.4 mpg for an average of 37.7 mpg.
Now have 1,339 miles on my smarte!

I have been logging all my fuelings at: http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/
You can configure your account for USD, mpg and etc. Canadians are paying over $5 per gallon for gas and the exchange rate is about equal. Europeans are paying over $8 per gallon in some countries!

Low mpg

In an earlier post (3/26) I documented the poor mpg that I was getting ( 26 mpg on 2 fill ups)

I purchased a "Scangauge" that measures things like mpg, engine temperature etc.
It is described elsewhere these forums and on www.scangauge.com

Using the scangauge, I have pretty much discovered the circumstances that cause this poor gas mileage.
If I get in the car when it has been sitting overnight or for a long time, and make my usual 2 mile drive, I get about 26 to 28 mpg and the engine temp ends up at about 150 degrees. If I drive it for a few more miles so that the engine temp levels off at about 185 degrees and then repeat the 2 mile drive, I will get about 40 to 42 mpg. This is very repeatable.

So the problem seems to be that the smart is using too much fuel (too rich a mixture perhaps) when it is not completely warm. What I don't know is if this just the way that the smart fuel system is designed or is my smart out of spec?

Has anyone else that has a scangauge for their smart, seen the same behavior. Is there any other scangauge? measurement that I use to further diagnose the problem?
