Jthomas, I agree, you'll get the same result on any car. I've used the ScanGauge for about 4 years, first on a Toyota Echo. Any short trip, praticularly from a cold start, results in very poor mileage, regardless of the type of car. You'll see that the longer your drive, as long as you don't go too fast, the better the mileage.
In an earlier post (3/26) I documented the poor mpg that I was getting ( 26 mpg on 2 fill ups)
I purchased a "Scangauge" that measures things like mpg, engine temperature etc.
It is described elsewhere these forums and on www.scangauge.com
Using the scangauge, I have pretty much discovered the circumstances that cause this poor gas mileage.
If I get in the car when it has been sitting overnight or for a long time, and make my usual 2 mile drive, I get about 26 to 28 mpg and the engine temp ends up at about 150 degrees. If I drive it for a few more miles so that the engine temp levels off at about 185 degrees and then repeat the 2 mile drive, I will get about 40 to 42 mpg. This is very repeatable.
So the problem seems to be that the smart is using too much fuel (too rich a mixture perhaps) when it is not completely warm. What I don't know is if this just the way that the smart fuel system is designed or is my smart out of spec?
Has anyone else that has a scangauge for their smart, seen the same behavior. Is there any other scangauge? measurement that I use to further diagnose the problem?
John
John what you are seeing is very normal, two miles from a cold start will never get close to normal operating temp.
1200 miles on the car and checked mpg for first time..topped off ..checked what was on the pump vs the fuel gage bars, varied terrain, for the east coast..some around town and some interstate...automatic only, no manual shifting...(interstate part of comute at about 70mph) and it was 44mpg..didn't baby it...but didn't floor it either...
its getting better but not good enough. Tank one 28mpg , tank 2-3 32.7 mpg, tank 4 33.1 mpg. Argh.
Don't feel bad, you're not alone. I have had the car for 2 months and have not been able to get higher than 34. It is mainly around town driving, auto only. A few highway trips. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
