Fifth fill up, this time 7.611 was all she would hold and I joined the 350 club with 354.4 miles for 46.3 mpg. Worst at start was 39. Full auto, easy break-in and now at 1500 miles. Changed to mid grade for next test.
DT muffler goes on soon and Michelin tires to follow since they always have given me optimum mpg and ride quality. 185/60 that is .300" wider and 1 1/2% more revs per mile (no big deal difference). Trying to start a 400 club, watch for it there will be a few of us there.

Nice - Dynamat Extreme sounds (pun intended) good. Does it induce overheat potential to engine?

One other note: I'm on reservation list for a 2008 Passion. I've heard nay saying from pre-2007 owneres on MB 450 vs Mit. 451 engine. How is your 451 holding up to expections so far?

I have gotten better mpg as the engine breaks in. I went from 38.5 with 250 miles on the car to now 41 mpg after 1100 miles on the car. It is the same commute to and from work. Half rural driving @ 60mph to short township speeds of 40-45mph to some interstate travel @65-70mph.

You (and the others that responded with similar comments) are right. Just as another experiment, I drove our Prius on the same 2 mile trip. When cold, it got 23 mpg. This is a bit less than my smart which got 26 mpg. And the Prius had the advantage of the engine turning off when I stopped at a light for a minute or so. When warmed up, the Prius got 52 mpg for this same 2 mile tirip which was better than the smart but to be expected from a hybrid.

The bottom line is that if you have a little short trip to make, either ride your bike or combine your trip with other needed trips. I will have to admit that the fact that my little smart is so much fun to drive has caused me to use much more gas than I need to. While waiting for my smart, we were a one car family and for 6 months, I survived by only riding my bike during the weekdays. I need to go back to bike riding, it is healthier for me and the environment even if it is not as much fun.

First fill for me!

271.3 miles on the car, filled with 6.833 gallons (little warning gauge said that I had .9 gallon left). This equals to 39.7 mpg for my first tank.

The first hundred miles were highway driving in an obnoxiously stiff wind. The remainder have been putz miles back and forth to work (top speed of 35 on a regular basis.) We shall see what happens on the second tank!

Spring Break Road Trip

172 miles 3.95 gal 92 octane $14.29 43.5 mpg Gassed up early to get ready for a road trip to NYC, running off with the school lunch lady Will let you know how it goes with a full load. 43.5 is the best yet for me, weather getting warmer. This is great.

242 miles, 6.02gallons, 40.19 mpg, making no effort to drive in any specific manner. That's a 20 mpg boost over the PT.

Mid-grade Report

My last fill-up was with mid-grade (89 octane). Mileage on this tank was 43 MPG. We had been averaging 42-43 MPG so no appreciable change.

Car has 2500 miles. Driven exclusively in "auto" mode. Usually with driver and passenger. Not much stop & go. About half this tank was freeway miles @ 65-75 MPH. Most of the other half was in a suburban setting with lots of hills.

From best first miss, to worst

228 miles 6.89 gal 92 octane $25.42 33.1 mpg missed the last tankful and fueled with two blobs left on the gage. Drove back from NJ on this tank via 684 and I 84 traffic was getting stopped at each town due to volume car was loaded to the gills. Initially disapointed and then thought would be happy to get this in the Miata... Funny how perspective has a way of coloring what you see.
