So, second fill up, slightly worse mileage. afternoon fill up, heat, worse.
269 miles, 7.90 gallons, This last week I did about 50 miles with AC, 20 miles in SFO with lots of hills, and about 120 highway no AC.
So, we dropped to 34 from 37. What's up with that?

1st tank was 320 miles and 38.0 mpg on dealers fuel. 100 miles from dealer, rest of travel 30 highway and 70 suburb driving (30-45 mph speeds). Love the car and plenty of looks.

I dont fill up until I am down to the 'last' section (which is SUPPOSE to be the 8th gallon) is left on the screen. If I see the tiny 'gas pump' flashing.. I interpret that as.. HEY! You are on the reserve gallon!
Is that the 'reserve' gallon that I have been informed of?

The fuel gauge isn't linear - the bars don't equate to 1 gallon each (it would be great if they did).
The blinky fuel icon is telling you that you're on the last gallon reserve - your odometer will change to display the amount of fuel left in 1/10ths of a gallon when on reserve.
My running average is 37.19 MPG after 2,654 miles. Best tank was 42.24, worst was 32.96.

I now have 3056 miles on my smart and have tracked each fill up as well as my cumulative total MPG. In total I am getting 39.4MPG with a low of 35.2 to a high of 43.8.
Due to the many variables impacting any single tank of gas the cumulative total gives the best representation of actual MPG performance IMO.

It's the A/C! From what others have been saying, A/C will lower your MPG by about 17% !

First tank- 41MPG!
Well, the first 312 miles are done. Mix of freeway, highway and some hill. Had two speed contests, We have decisively proved that a '72 lightly modified MGB is EXACTLY as fast as a Smart! At least from a rolling start to about 65 mph. Been at full throttle,5k, more than I should be for a fresh engine, but no sustained holding it there, just short bursts, so no harm done. I was shocked to get 41 MPG. Expected worse.

now have 2729 miles. been quite a trip. probably had 50 or more people drive the smart. been driving it hard sometimes, babying it others. avg mpg is 35.74. best tank 47.47 all highway driving about 65 average. hard to go that slow but wanted to see what i could get. worst tank 30.56. lots of city and many "test drives" gunning it most of the time. much better than my mercedes suv so what the heck.

This tank got me 44.51mpg
Erm.. okay first, I knobbed up and started a thread on this under general discussion; we'll list this under 'duh, perhaps if I used forums more often I'd know to search first' - and I was already 'checked' for it so we are good :-)
Any way:
In Northern NJ it is hilly and windy (not wind that blows; but windy as in twist and turns) if you stick to back roads; which I use to get to the office 31 miles from my house
Also pickup rt78 sometimes if I am coming home late an traffic is light enough.
About 1/4 of the time I have had a passenger in the motor.
First tank 294.7 miles 7.7 gallons (or close to it) = 38.27 miles per gallon
Filled up today with 625 miles on the clock - making this tank 330.3 miles - fill up took 7.4 gallons = 44.51 miles per gallon
Essentially both tanks where used for the same trips; in the same areas at the same speeds - except for my trip to and from the dealer on the first tank, to pick up interior mats I probably drove at 80mph most of the way there and back (approx 100 miles round trip)
Normally highway I maintain 65 - 70 (its more fun)
Back roads, hills, twist etc to office - up and down from 0 - 40, 45, 50 and back to 0
No AC yet - NJ isnt that warm :-)
Windows always closed (keeps dust out of my baby)
Radio blaring!!!!!!
Cheers all
Ian

Thanks Ian
Looks like I need to update the spread sheet...
you folks are wearing me out..
I plan to find a way to post a sortable spreadsheet/database so you do not see just a flat file sorted one way...
Got some reports to write from my work here in Seattle... probably get to all this data end of this month
