Hi Donna how long are your average trips. Sounds like the car is short tripping never getting to full operating temp each time you run it. what kind of milage where you getting before the smart?

mpg

Hi
I am not getting what I anticipated with the smart car regarding mpg
my average mpg is around 31-33.. I use premium shell fuel.
I do not take off fast after stops, I do not drive over the speed limit
I have not taken a long trip ... no more than 20 miles from home.
most trips are from 2-6 miles a trip in the city. I use mostly automatic mode. I realize that this is a 3 cynlinder... but there seems to be a strain on even small hills especially when I have just stopped at a light and take off. anyone else having this problem..

Hi Donnah and fellow Smarties!

There could be a variety of reasons why you might be getting low mileage. I really believe using 'quality' gas is key. I keep away from Am/pm Arco, Sams or Costco gas. I only use 'Chevron, Shell, Mobil, Union 76' Premium. Sure it's a tad more expensive but you win in the long run.

I have experienced lack of gas mileage in my other vehicles if a sub-standard gas was used.

A lot has to do with 'how you drive' and other factors too. Do you drive Conservative or just ' boot it'. haha I drive about 2k miles, conservatively, a month and am getting in the 40's in gas mileage. Again, there are other factors that could be the reason why...but perhaps start with the gas.

Good luck and enjoy your Smart

The car has more than enough power, Its not the fuel you are using. Repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting different results is a sign of insanity

2-6 mile trips are what's killing your mileage. It would kill your mileage in any car, only it would be much worse. Take some longer drives and you'll see the mileage will be similar to other's here.

Hi all...good morning...;)

Just got my Smartie last Friday, and this is what I have so far:

1st tank>>>>mostly urban driving>>>>>35.8 mpg,
2nd tank>>>>mostly freeway from
(from San Francisco to San Jose on 280)>>>>>39.6 mpg

I'm still hope that these number will go up as the Smartie break in.

Anyone else commuting from SF to SJ using 280? Please compare our numbers.

By the way, hello to the other blue Smartie that was beside me on 280 this morning...

Thanks and peace to all!!!!!!!!;)

Second tankful: 7.5 gallons for 299 miles = 39.9 mpg. Manual mode this time; late shifting plus more AC usage and a 15-mile jaunt of back road hoonage (holding 2nd to 55 mph, then 60 in 3rd gear for a few miles, etc.).
