doogster, it sounds like you're doing really well, however, it seems you've now done 6 fillups in only 900 miles of driving. I'd say you're so eager to check your MPG that you fill when your tank isn't even half empty.

A much more realistic check of your MPG would be had if you don't fill until your tank is nearly empty. I too have achieved 53MPG, but it was on a large fill after nearly 300 miles.

I'm always a little skeptical when someone's claim of good or poor mileage is on a very small fill. It does indeed sound like your style of driving should give you mileage above 40MPG consistently. Good job.

Wishful thinking -for some of us

Wow! I am seeing some GREAT mileage from other Smarties.

My commute is 45 miles 1 way-some mild inclines on the road. My little Smart is getting about 40 mpg - 'ish'... and high 30's with the air conditioner used. (It's been in the low 100 degrees folks. Air is not an option, but a must) It's all freeway and here and in Southern California the speed limits range 65 and 70 miles an hour. Drive any slower than that and you get eaten alive by other vehicles...not including the 18 wheelers that will use us and our SmartCars as a casual speed bump.

Who knew that conscientious driving was called 'hypermiling'? Definitely not me! haha Didn't we all learn this 'technique' way back in the day of 'drivers ed' in high school? hahah Old trick..new name. haha

So for those of us who are not getting 50+ mpg...don't lose heart. We are still doing 'better than the average bear.'

Hi guys... I am always anxious to check my mileage... but that is not why I am always filling up at 1/2 a tank... when gas prices are rising I like to get gas at half a tank before it increases... when gas prices are going down I wait as long as possible to fill up... to hopefully get the cheaper price in a few days. its probably stupid and does no good... but, such is life.

Poor mileage

Any body out there getting bad mileage out of your smart? I'm getting 22-24 city and 28 highway while never running the engine above 3,000 rpm's.

Hey now,

At $4.77/gal, I got 5.463 gallons this morning, and I was able to get 233 miles. This means for this fillup, I got 233 miles/5.463gals = 42.67 mi/gal on 80% highway & 20% around town.

I also noticed an improvement of 5 mi/gal on Shell gas over Valero gas. For a while, I was only managing 38 mi/gal on Valero gas. I don't know if I can attribute this to the gas or the fact that my Smartie is still breaking in. I had the Smartie for 32 days now with just a hair under 3000 miles. I just hope my milage would continue to improve.

I will definitely fill you guys in if anything changes.

I've posted before, now have 1800 miles on my passion cabrio and have never got above 25 mpg in the city and 37 freeway, no A/C on, and very light footed. I'm in touch with the dealer, who knows this is an issue, but no solution yet. Any other drivers in San Francisco...how's your mileage in the city?

Try using better product

Hi Smarties..

Try using a higher quality of premium gas.. such as Shell, Mobil, Union 76 or Chevron. Sure it may be .10 cents more..but hey...what is .80 cents compared to the additional mileage you will get, right?

And.. it is better for your engine, too!

Also it depends on your driving style...remember.. its a 3 cylinder....

Good luck!

Suzanne
