I didn't mean they didn't DO anything....I meant they didn't DO anything as far as tweaking anything in the engine for instance. Still maintain that the mileage is too low!

Live in N.E. florida & just checked MPG for the 2nd time. 1st time was 36.5 and today was 25.5. That doesn't seem right, so made sure I filled it all the way up with 93 supreme gas. A/C always on & I usually shift it, but not always. Most of the miles are just tooling around this island but about 1/2 the miles was a 90 mile round trip to Jacksonville & back home. Tire pressure is fine, about 1 or 2 lbs above recommended level, got it that way. I do push it a bit, but not crazy. The trip to Jax was mostly about 70 to 75 mph. Will report again, I would expect at least high 30's to low 40's MPG.

Absolutely nothing wrong with my driving habits. You can not compare the mileage results from a car like the Smart with a 70 hp 3 cyl. to an S55 with a 496 hp V8. Like comparing grapes to watermelons. As I stated previously, on an EXTREMELY light foot, I got 27 mpg, while trying not to get run over by every grandmother on a bicycle at every stoplight.

The first question out of anyone's mouth is "What mileage do you get?" and when I tell them 26-27 mpg in town, no one is impressed. Neither am I for that matter.
Thought that I was the only one with this "where did the mileage go"? First tank when new was @ 39mpg – not too bad. With a little over 3,000 miles on it now, we are seeing #’s around 30 – a couple of times even in the mid 20’s! Always using premium along with the 10% ethanol that is always being shoved on us. The only thing different about our driving habits is that the a/c is now on most the time, or else the top is open.

Shouldn't we add another variable: Miles on Vehicle?

Springfield, OH to Springfield, MA
on the trip to Ohio I recorded the worst milage so far 31mpg running with traffic without regard to fuel cost. On the trip back I tought I would give a more gentle approach a try and got my second best tankful. The car is in the driveway with half a tank in it and that needs to be added to the trip yet the numbers for two tankfuls of 93 octane (only choice in Ohio and Pennsylvania)
37.8 included some bumper to bumper urban congerstion on I270
43.2 inluding the hills of eastern Pennsylvania
some things I noticed that may interest you on the scanguage
first gear reading from a stop sign on to RT 80 8 mpg
30 to 33 mpg readings as you approached the hill tops could be improved by just "infestimably" lifting and riding it over the top an old school vacuume gage will get you better results than a scan guage
dropping a gear to top the hill gave readings in the low twenties to teens if you stepped on it yes one gear more than 10 mpg
The scanguage goes back in a box in a drawer. More fun to drive the car than the guage

They improve with time (miles) the biggest variable is the most difficult to reset.

92 Octane Compared with 87 Octane Fuel

My Car: 2008 smart fortwo Passion Coupe.

My Driving Conditions: Eighty percent of my driving was in Manual Mode on two-lane county roads with lots of hills and curves, no stop lights and only a few stop signs. The county roads are located in the foothills of the Smokies, requiring frequent downshifting to fourth and third gears, occasionally to second gear. Twenty percent of my driving was in Automatic Mode from my home in the country to the surrounding towns on a mix of two-lane, four-lane, and six-lane roads with lots of stop lights. My maximum speed under these typical driving conditions was about 60 mph. My average speed was under 45 mph.

My Test Conditions: I ran through four tanks of premium grade, 92 octane Pilot gasoline, up to 10% ethanol. After that, under the same driving conditions, I ran through four tanks of regular grade, 87 octane Pilot gasoline, up to 10% ethanol. My A/C was on throughout both periods of tests and measurements. My odometer rolled past 5,000 miles on the last tank of gas.

My Shifting Habits: My typical upshift points are at 15, 30, 45, and 50 mph. My typical downshift points are at 40, 30, 20, and 10 mph.

92 Octane Stats:
1091 miles
26.6 gallons
$108.79 total cost
41.0 miles per gallon
$0.10 cost per mile @ $4.09 per gallon

87 Octane Stats:
924 miles
25.1 gallons
$97.64 total cost
36.8 miles per gallon
$0.11 cost per mile @ $3.89 per gallon

My Conclusions: I got significantly better mileage with premium (41.0 mpg) than with regular grade gasoline (36. 8 mpg). Not too surprisingly, even with the higher cost of premium, I got a slightly lower cost per mile with premium ($0.10) than with regular grade gasoline ($0.11).

This is all good information but overall I think we are all too varied in circumstances to get any accuracy. A good average would be more useful in my opinion and I found by using this web page exactly where I stand in the mix of same like users.

Hope this helps someone.
