First mileage check was on Mobil 93 oct gasoline in 95%city, 5% highway on this tank....33 mpg...mostly cold weather driving, fairly aggressive driving and mixed auto/manual mode driving....mostly manual mode. Filled up with Hess this time so that comparison will be interesting. 7.18 gals=238miles.

Typical terrain: hilly/flat, 500ft altitude.
Driving style: conservative
Load: single drive mostly
Fuel brand and octane: Kroger's 93
1st fill up - 7 gal. - 252 miles (70/30 highway/city) = 36mpg

2nd fill up - 5.59 gal – 178.5 (10/90 highway/city) = 32mpg

Tank #3 323.6 miles using 7.473 gal = 43.3 (rural 80% city 20%)
Tank #4 344.2 miles using 8.566 gal = 40.182 (HILLY state roads 40%, Interstate 40%, city 20%)

Now I am over 1000 mi and run it on the Interstate. Using the scangauge helps me feather foot and watch the miles per gallon).

Notice that I put in over the 8.4 gal. The light was flashing when I pulled into the station. I also tripped the vent valve - what is that you ask? On the forward side in the filler neck is a little plastic rod that if you push it down it opens the vent to the tank and allows more fuel than the normal space for expansion. Normally the cap opens this valve when you screw the cap back in. This is there to keep you from totally filling the tanks and why sometimes we seem to get more or less fill of gas.

My diesel Jettas all had these and I removed them because diesel doesn't expand like gas and they don't have a carbon canister to saturate with fuel. That extra on those TDI's let me go nearly 800 miles between fill-ups.

This time on my smart I knew that I was going to drive another 15 miles home so I knew that if the fuel expanded that I would have used some of it up and not flood the carbon trap. I don't recommend it for amateurs, but if you wonder what that is and why if you push the nozzle against it that you hear a fizzing sound, that is the bubbles of gas that are in the tank. Not recommended for those that aren't very cautious and I didn't top off I just clicked it again a few times after the first major shut off.

My post from ealier today seems to have vanished?
1st tank 24 mgp! Used "D" for first day only, now only using stick for manual shifting (not the paddles). I've a very defensive driver. So far 48 miles of 2 clicks of the gas gauge, also not very good. any suggestions

Either you have a definite problem with your car or there is some essential ingredient missing from your mileage calculations. ARe you sure the tank was FULL when it showed it was full? There can be as much as a gallon of fuel between actual full and indicated full. Your gas tank level gauge may also be *off*.

That's the best I can offer ....

Burned 5 tanks already

I live in Houston and most of my driving is stop and go, even on the freeway. My first tank got about 33 mpg. Then I tried a tank using all standard shift. Mind you, I went from a 6 cyl to a 3 cyl., so I had a hard time gearing MYSELF down to a slower pace. With that tank I got 28 mpg. Third tank I drove all automatic transmission and got 36 mpg. After that I got 33 mpg. and 35 mpg. respectively. This includes the use of air conditioning almost continuously.

I've been surprised how peppy the car is with the a/c on. That doesn't seem to slow it down any.

Okay, I travel around Seattle area in my smart passion. Driving conservatively, occasionally with a passenger I first averaged 36.5 miles per gallon straight from the dealer. I checked my tire pressure when cold, and found them a bit low, so I pumped 29psi into the front tires and 36psi in back. At 484 odometer reading, I found I was getting 40.8 mpg. This is using primarily Costco premium unleaded. This is also combined hill (some steep hills), in city and freeway driving. As of odometer reading 969, the car feels like it is loosening up a bit. I drive using the manual setting and have ever since getting the car on 3/5. It is now averaging 41.7 mpg. I don't know if this is due to the car finally 'breaking in' (I have babied it!) or because I'm getting better at learning it's shifting patterns. Thanx to everyone else that has posted - it's a fun & interesting journey!

I drive conservatively (sort of), mostly in drive. But there's this killer hill (Sylvan Hill, Portland) on the freeway coming home. I have to press it pretty hard just to keep it at 55mph (3500 rpms). I've been getting low to mid 30's (disapointing) with 37.5 last time. I've got about 1500 miles on the car.

Gotta be the hill, right? Any hill-attack advice?
