Going down... (transmission)

My house is located in a very steep hill. Every time that I drive down the hill I set the car to neutral to avoid high RPMs
I wonder if this will affect the clutch/engine/car is any way?

In first gear, would the car still accelerate? If so, let the engine do the braking until the rpm is as high as you want to limit it, then assist with the foot brake.

Hi Gusfraga and Donald, I'm not sure, but I think smart recommends a break-in period in engine breaking. Not sure what it is. The owner's manual should have some comment on this.

For first 500 miles, engine rpms should not exceed 4000 rpm or 2/3rds of max rpm. IF you don't have a tach, you'll have to use some judgement by the sound of the engine. There is no break in period for engine breaking as such....don't understand your wording there....the limiting factor is RPM whether engine braking or accelerating.

I would be good for the engine braking period if you used it to help slow down your car, negative cylinder pressure is good for your compression rings brake in period.
Just keep the RPM to a reasonable level.

gusfraga, putting any car in neutral and coasting down a hill will not do anything to engine or clutch, however, you will be very hard on the brakes because the engine is not helping with the braking.
