that is just the way the mercedes auto light sensor works... I was thinking of cutting the wires that go to the sensor and change the sensor to a toyota/lexus one. in my opinion the best auto light sensor is those. they come on when they should and turn off when they should.

I hate my light sensor because it turns on when its not supposed to

This is my feeling as well -- and yes, sometimes my lights stay on (or turn on) when it appears there is no good reason.

RE: parnami, ShoshTrvls; So, yeah, it WOULD be bad if they turned off at night. And, they DO turn on when they should. It is their Overtime work that bothers me. I just like for things to function as they were designed to do. And, they don't do that.

OTOH: I guess it is some slight consolation to know I have company.

I've had this same problem since I got my smart in March. I took it in once and they reset the computer, which didn't help. My lights are on almost all the time, even at noon with very clear skies. It also affects my windshield wipers which won't come on unless it is really raining hard.

I was in picking up a new panel a few weeks ago (some disgruntled past student decided to key my little smart) and I talked to the service department again. They agreed to replace the sensor. It just came in on Friday and I'm going to schedule to get it put on at the end of the week. I'll post to let you all know if it solves the problem.

Love the manualness

My last car, which I think is a great car, has automatic headlights and they always bothered me going on at the littlest provocation of shadow. Their operation ran against one of my own idiosyncrasies. I love being to decide when to turn on and off the headlights in my new smart. It may be along the same lines as enjoying a manual transmission. Regardless of whether I liked them or not, I would definitely get anything fixed as soon as I could.

Actually it was a '03 Toyota Matrix XRS. great car. Too bad you can't get that engine anymore, unless you buy a Lotus.

Our brand new 2009 Cabrio has the same light sensor problem. On in bright sunlight! My wife accused me of breaking something when I installed our satellite radio! Nice to know THIS wasn't my fault!
