You will note that the heated mirrors have their own 5-ampere fuse. Even more obligingly, this fuse is in an auxiliary holder that plugs into one of the jacks along the left-hand side of the fuse block, as you can see by looking at the actual block in your car. One need only unplug this holder, and connect its plug to one terminal of a suitable switch. Then, connect the other terminal of the switch to the jack on the fuse block. This can be done by means of proper connectors, so that no wires need be cut, nor any permanent alterations made.
Since I arrive here I receive lot of request regarding this heated mirror topic.
Here what can I say to you :
All smart cars with the option "electric mirror" have their heated fonction always on.
It is not an error or misfunction, it so intended.
However, this has occur lot of trouble and complain (not only on US market) and it will be change with the Modell Year 2009.
From this point heated mirror fonction will be linked with the rearwindow heat function.
Good information. I see two options for me in S.E. VA, with the car garaged overnight: pull fuse #R1 (5A) and live without heated mirrors, or jump the mirror circuit onto the rear window defogger ala ’09. The rear window defogger and the engine cooling fan share fuse #28 (40A), but one is not likely to be using the mirror heaters and rear window defogger during the same season as the fan. Be interesting to see if smart ups the amperage of #28 in the ‘09s. It would probably be too much to expect smart to devise a dealer-effected “field change” for ‘08s.

"Subject: heated mirrors
Terry,
The exterior mirrors are being heated the entire time the car is on, not only at low ambient temperatures. This is a feature of the vehicle which prevents icing and fogging. The wording in the 2009 model owner’s manual has been updated to correct this information.
Kind regards,"
Nothing said about tying them in with the rear window defogger in NA '09 W451s. Maybe that is something that ROW will get and we won't.
I guess the proper way to do it would be to increase fuse #28 to 45A, and provide the mirror circuit with its own 5A in-line fuse.
i'm not sure tying them into the rear defrost is necessarily a better solution - i'd rather have them on their own circuit or on all the time to be honest. there are lots of times when the mirrors might be obstructed and benefit from clearing even though the rear window is not actually fogged up. a/c and/or windshield defrost often keeps the glazing from fogging but water, snow and/or ice can still develop on the mirrors.
i'm pretty okay with them being on all the time - even if it's just water beading on the mirrors from rain, the added heat evaporates that water and returns a clear view pretty nicely, without having to turn on yet another switch.
as i suspected earlier in the thread - the confusion comes from a translation gaffe in writing the english/usa owner's manual.

Well, there we go. No fire hazzard. Just all the time heat. I hope its changed for 09 to at least being able to turn it on by a switch or like K said, with the window defogger..
