Here what can I say to you :

All smart cars with the option "electric mirror" have their heated fonction always on.
It is not an error or misfunction, it so intended.

However, this has occur lot of trouble and complain (not only on US market) and it will be change with the Modell Year 2009.
From this point heated mirror fonction will be linked with the rearwindow heat function.

hope I have helped you.

kind regards

K

Wow! cool! that's a better response than my US Mercedes service rep! Thanks for the info re: the heated mirrors always on!

You will note that the heated mirrors have their own 5-ampere fuse. Even more obligingly, this fuse is in an auxiliary holder that plugs into one of the jacks along the left-hand side of the fuse block, as you can see by looking at the actual block in your car. One need only unplug this holder, and connect its plug to one terminal of a suitable switch. Then, connect the other terminal of the switch to the jack on the fuse block. This can be done by means of proper connectors, so that no wires need be cut, nor any permanent alterations made.

I plan to do this when I have time.
Awesome! a solution! thanks!

EV smart related posts moved

Some posts on this thread were obviously not related to the mirror issue. I've moved them into their own thread:
http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/for...v-smart-13709/
That way, they won't get lost in the heated mirror debate...

So, I was crammed in the footwell jumpering the window motors to operate when the key was out, and I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about.

In my car, the mirror elements seem to be in fuse 38, w/ a 7.5A fuse. There is also something in fuse 39, also with a 7.5A fuse. The wire out of fuse 39 is black/yellow, and heads into a loom, so I didn't trace to see what it was. But I digress.

I popped out the fuse and stuck my ammeter in line. The draw on the mirror elements was about 1.85A.

I'll probably throw a switch in there so I can turn that draw off when I'm drive-in movieing or corn field partying. I'm planning on using my blank button for hatch release, so I'll probably just put a hidden switch by the fuse that I can use when I need to turn it off.

More fuel to the fire. Discuss.

Thanks for that input, Grzzly. Hardly worth loosing any sleep over a 25 watt parasitic...even if you don't need it in the summer. I thought it would be alot more...like around 100 or more watts as hot as the mirror gets.

Heated Mirror Fix Step-by-Step Part 1 of 2

To take grzzlycanuck 's solution, which I think is k.i.s.s. I'll provide how to make this happen.

Things you will need to perform this FIX.
1) Soldering Gun & Solder (and the skills to use it)
2) Electrical Tape
3) Heat-Shrink Tubing
4) 3 Female Tongue Connectors
5) 1 Illuminated 12vdc switch (I used a Radioshack 275-0018)
6) 1 18" Black automotive hookup wire (I used 18 gauge)
7) 2 18" color-of-your-choice automotive hookup wires (same guage)
8) approx. 1/2" drillbit

First release the S.A.M. (the one with the fuses) from its holder (do NOT remove any wires!) so it looks like this as viewed from the left.........
Where I have label SWITCHED POWER are locations R1-R4.
The WHITE fuse holders are what we are interested in.
One of them has TWO BLACK wires with BLUE STRIPES.
This is the one we will be concentrating on. These are the heated mirrors and there is one wire for the left an one for the right.

Proceed to remove the fuse from only this fuse-holder and begin to pull the TOP of the WHITE fuse holder away from the S.A.M. like this.....

When released it will look like this.......

Now CUT the wires approx. 3-4" from the end like this.......

Now solder and heat-shrink one of your selected-colored-wires to the pair that runs off to the heated mirrors like the following......

Now take the OTHER-colored-wire and do the same for the pair coming FROM the fuse-holder like this......(also insulate when done)......

Now go ahead and connect the BLACK wire to a suitable ground and terminate EACH wire with the Female Connectors like this.......

I STRONGLY suggest you label at least one of the colored-wires i.e. the wire coming from the fuse holder as POWER.

The illluminated 12vdc switch I chose from Radioshack looks like this.....

On the back it has 3 male terminals labeled, POWER, LOAD and, no kidding, EARTH.
